Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental condition that affects how people communicate, interact socially, and process sensory information.

In Texas, approximately 1 in 36 children are diagnosed with autism, making it one of the most common neurodevelopmental conditions in the state.

Autism is characterized by differences in social communication and interaction, along with restricted or repetitive behaviors and interests. The condition manifests differently in each individual, which is why it’s called a “spectrum” disorder.

Some patients may need daily support, while others live independently and have successful careers. What unites all individuals with autism is their unique way of experiencing and interacting with the world around them.

The challenges associated with autism can significantly impact daily life, affecting everything from social relationships to sensory experiences.

But with the right support and treatment options, including emerging therapies like medical marijuana, many patients can lead fulfilling lives and reach their full potential.

Types of Autism

Autism is made up of different presentations, each with unique characteristics and support needs:

Classic Autism (Autistic Disorder)

This represents what many people traditionally think of when they hear “autism.” Patients with this type typically have challenges with social communication, exhibit repetitive behaviors, and may have intellectual disabilities.

They often require support in daily activities and may have delayed language development.

Asperger’s Syndrome

Now part of the broader autism spectrum, Asperger’s describes individuals who have autism traits but typically develop language skills on schedule and have average or above-average intelligence.

Patients often struggle with social interactions. They may have intense interests in specific topics, but they can usually live independently and function well in society.

Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS)

PDD-NOS was previously used to characterize individuals who exhibited some autism traits but did not fully satisfy the criteria for classic autism or Asperger’s syndrome. They typically had fewer and milder symptoms.

High-Functioning Autism

Patients on the autism spectrum with average or above-average intellectual abilities often conceal their autism traits in social settings.

But they still experience challenges with social communication and sensory processing and may struggle with anxiety or depression.

Severe Autism

Patients with severe autism may require substantial daily assistance, struggle with communication, exhibit severe sensory sensitivity, and participate in self-harming actions. These patients need more structured environments and consistent routines.

How Medical Marijuana Can Help Texas Patients with Autism Manage Their Symptoms

Medical marijuana can provide relief for autism patients and can also help manage their symptoms.

  • Calming Effects – Clinical studies show CBD can reduce anxiety, irritability, and hyperactivity in autism patients. The 2025 University of California San Diego study found that two-thirds of participants showed behavioral improvements when treated with CBD, especially in areas of aggression and hyperactivity.
  • Sleep Improvement – Sleep disturbances affect up to 80% of individuals with autism. CBD has been shown to promote better sleep quality and duration, resulting in improved mood and overall function.
  • Sensory Processing Support – CBD’s interaction with the endocannabinoid system may help reduce sensory overload. It can lessen overstimulation and sensory overload from sounds and crowds.

  • Reduces Self-Harm Behaviors – Studies show that CBD may help reduce the frequency and intensity of self-harm behaviors.
  • Improvement in Communication and Social Interaction – While CBD doesn’t cure autism’s communication challenges, research shows it may help reduce anxiety and agitation that can interfere with social interactions and communication.
  • Seizure Control – 25% of patients with autism also have epilepsy. CBD’s anti-seizure properties can help ease epileptic symptoms that are usually prominent in patients in the spectrum.

How Get Medical Marijuana Card in Texas

Medical marijuana has been legal in Texas in limited forms for several years, but access has historically been restricted. In 2015, the state introduced the Texas Compassionate Use Program (CUP), and over time, lawmakers expanded the list of qualifying conditions through updates in 2019 and 2021. Today, many Texans with chronic or debilitating medical conditions can legally obtain low-THC cannabis as part of their treatment.

Medical Marijuana as an Alternative Treatment

Although conventional therapies and behavioral treatments are often used to support those with autism, they don’t always provide consistent results for every individual. As a result, some have turned to medical marijuana as a possible way to help alleviate symptoms like anxiety, mood swings, or sensory sensitivities.
