Three Steps to a Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Card

With the passing of Senate Bill 3 in 2016, medical cannabis became a treatment option for Pennsylvanians with various debilitating conditions. New changes in 2018 expanded qualifying conditions and caused even more dispensaries to open around the state.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will my license remain valid?

Licenses are valid for one year in Pennsylvania. If you plan to continue participating in the Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Program (PMMP), you’ll need to obtain a patient certification from a certified doctor and pay the fee each year. You’ll receive a new card in the mail every time you re-apply.

How much will medical marijuana cost?

Different conditions may require different doses and products, so it’s hard to accurately say how much your medical marijuana will cost. We suggest contacting your local dispensary or visiting their website for up-to-date pricing.

You can find a complete list of licensed Pennsylvania dispensaries here.

What forms of medical marijuana are permitted?

Dispensaries in Pennsylvania are authorized to sell a wide array of cannabis products, including:

  1. Inhalable forms (flower)
  2. Vaporizer oils and concentrates
  3. Topical products (creams and ointments)
  4. Ingestible products (pills and capsules)

You may also make edibles from pre-purchased flower, if you’d like.

Is medical marijuana authorized for patients under 18?

Yes. A minor with a serious medical condition can access medical marijuana through a designated caregiver. See the PMMP’s Patient and Caregiver Resources for more information.

Will I be allowed to grow medical marijuana for personal consumption?

No. At this time, the state of Pennsylvania prohibits patients from growing their own medical marijuana plants.

How much medical marijuana can a patient or caregiver possess?

Medical marijuana patients can buy and possess up to a 90-day supply of marijuana at one time. This amount is determined by your physician.

For a full rundown of your rights as a patient, head to the Possession Laws page on the PMMP website.

How long will it take for the PMMP to approve my application?

Starting from the date you pay, it can take 7 days for the PMMP to print your ID card and 14 days to receive it in the mail. Your card will be mailed to the address in your patient profile.
