SB 271 states that physicians can only recommend and not “prescribe” medical marijuana to their patients. The bill also mandated that medical cannabis must be provided and distributed to patients in processed, non-smokable forms.
In 2020, the state passed three new laws relevant to its medical marijuana program. Among those new laws, HB 819 enables licensed physicians to recommend medical marijuana to patients with any debilitating condition they believe medical cannabis can treat.

After issuing a recommendation, the doctor generally sends the applicable form of medical marijuana to a licensed pharmacy. The patient will receive a notification once their medical cannabis order is ready to be picked up.
Under the law, patients may possess up to a one-month supply of medical marijuana. The law also limits raw marijuana to 2.5 ounces every two weeks per patient.
The regulatory board responsible for monitoring the dosages and amounts purchased is the Louisiana Medical Marijuana Tracking System.
