Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. While recreational marijuana is still illegal, medical marijuana is legal in Louisiana.

With the passing of SB 271 in 2016, Louisiana became the first state in the Deep South to create a comprehensive medical marijuana program. Qualified patients can purchase medical cannabis products at state-licensed pharmacies.

SB 271 states that physicians can only recommend and not “prescribe” medical marijuana to their patients. The bill also mandated that medical cannabis must be provided and distributed to patients in processed, non-smokable forms.

However, in 2020, the state passed three new laws relevant to medical marijuana. Among those new laws is HB 819—a bill that enables licensed physicians to recommend medical marijuana to patients with any debilitating condition they believe medical cannabis can treat.

You may only use your medical marijuana recommendation to purchase medical cannabis products from licensed pharmacies in Louisiana.

Below is a list of establishments that are regulated by the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy:

The Louisiana Board of Pharmacy also recognized the nine regions of the state established by the Department of Health, allocating one marijuana pharmacy permit to each region.

The nine regions and their associated parishes are:

  • Acadian (Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, and Vermilion)
  • Capitol (Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Pointe Coupee, West Baton Rouge, and West Feliciana)
  • Central (Avoyelles, Catahoula, Concordia, Grant, LaSalle, Rapides, Vernon, and Winn)
  • Metropolitan (Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, and St. Bernard)
  • Northeast (Caldwell, East Carroll, Franklin, Jackson, Lincoln, Madison, Morehouse, Ouachita, Richland, Tensas, Union, and West Carroll)
  • Northwest (Bienville, Bossier, Caddo, Claiborne, DeSoto, Natchitoches, Red River, Sabine, and Webster)
  • Southeast (Livingston, St. Helena, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, and Washington)
  • Southwest (Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, and Jefferson Davis)
  • Teche (Assumption, Lafourche, St. Charles, St. James, St. John, St. Mary, and Terrebonne)

After issuing a recommendation, the doctor generally sends the applicable form of medical cannabis to a licensed pharmacy. The patient will receive a notification once their medical cannabis order is ready to be picked up.

Under the law, patients may possess up to a one-month supply of medical marijuana. The law also limits raw marijuana to 2.5 ounces every two weeks per patient.

The regulatory board responsible for monitoring the dosages and amounts purchased is the Louisiana Medical Marijuana Tracking System.

The new patient’s medical marijuana recommendation cost is $199.

Renewing your medical marijuana recommendation costs $149.
